We Are Called to Follow the Example of the Penitent Love of the Sinful Woman

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the joint Morning Programme of the radio stations of the Diocese of Bačka was dedicated to the days of Holy (Passion) Week. In the spirit of this theme, the Novi Sad catechist Branislav Ilić spoke about the sacred commemoration of Holy and Great Wednesday, with particular emphasis on the penitent sinful woman who, in the act of pouring precious myrrh upon the Saviour’s feet, manifested active repentance.

“On Holy and Great Wednesday, we remember the sinful woman who washed the Saviour’s feet, wiped them with her hair, and anointed them with myrrh. In the person of the penitent harlot, we see an example of great repentant love. The liturgical services of this day reveal to us the power of repentance and love, through which the grace of God is poured out abundantly, like oil, upon all those who sincerely repent. The repentance of the harlot was not sudden, nor did it occur by chance; she underwent an inner preparation, and being illumined by the power of the Saviour, she came to hate her vile and sinful deeds. While the Lord was dining in the house of Simon the Leper, she actively repented of all her sins that had darkened her soul. We too are called to follow the example of the penitent love of the sinful woman and to be reborn in the spiritual bath of repentance, so that we may enter prepared into the joy of the Feast of feasts and, with love and a pure conscience, receive at the Paschal Matins the wondrous words: ‘Come, receive the light from the Unwaning Light, and glorify Christ who is risen from the dead,’” said, among other things, Catechist Branislav Ilić.
