The Path to Christ Is a Departure from Self-Love and an Opening Towards God and One’s Neighbour

On Friday, September 25, 2026, catechist Branislav Ilić appeared as a guest on the morning programme of „Hram“ Television. The discussion, hosted by journalist Marija Petrović, focused on the significance of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, with particular attention paid to the liturgical characteristics of the feast.

In the opening part of the conversation, catechist Branislav shared with viewers his impressions from the gathering held to mark the second anniversary of the „Kinonia“ portal. According to him, it was a gathering characterized by true communion and active love. The editor of the „Kinonia“ portal emphasized the importance of such spiritual encounters; on one hand, they offer an opportunity for instruction, while on the other, they provide the joy of meeting face-to-face and strengthening the sense of community essential for a successful mission. This year’s gathering was graced by the presence of the Bishop of Osječko Polje and Baranja, as well as numerous abbots, priests, deacons, the faithful, and regular contributors to the portal—whose work within our local Church is recognized as a valuable step forward in the field of the Church’s mission. Speaking about the Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, the guest on Hram Television recalled that on this day we commemorate the finding of the Precious Cross by the holy and pious Empress Helena, as well as the numerous victories of the Holy Emperor Constantine, who defeated God-opposing enemies through the power of the Cross. Catechist Branislav outlined the key liturgical features of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, noting that during the solemn procession at the conclusion of Matins, the Cross is brought to the centre of the church, where it remains until the leave-taking of the feast. He also highlighted the significance of the liturgical hymns chanted on this day, which articulate the Church’s theology regarding the power of the Cross.

Marija Petrović’s guest also discussed the fast prescribed by the Church for this feast. According to Catechist Branislav, Nikon of Montenegro (the Syrian) testifies that the faithful prepared for the veneration of the Precious Cross through fasting, as the feast itself was established for that very purpose. We fast in memory of the appearance of the Cross—to the glory of the crucified and revealed Christ. Since the Holy Liturgy is celebrated on this day, the fast is not strict; rather, due to the joy of the Eucharist, a dispensation is granted allowing for the use of oil.

Later in the conversation, Catechist Branislav Ilić spoke about the concept of the „cross-like nature“ of man. He reminded the audience that man was created in the image and likeness of God and that, from the very moment of creation, he bears the mark of the Cross within his being. He substantiated his remarks by reflecting on the Holy Sacrament of Baptism, in which the newly baptized is crucified with Christ so that he may rise again with Christ. According to him, the Christian life is inconceivable without bearing the Cross, for the Lord calls upon each of us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him without hesitation.

In the concluding part of the conversation, a lecture was announced—to be delivered by catechist Branislav Ilić with the blessing of Metropolitan Irinej of Bačka—marking the 250th anniversary of the Church of the Holy Unmercenary Physicians and Wonderworkers Cosmas and Damian in Futog. The guest on Hram TV noted that numerous lectures have been held within the church in Futog throughout the year, as this jubilee calls for our participation and contribution; this ensures proper recognition of the spiritual and historical significance of the church, which has served as the heart of this town near Novi Sad for over two centuries.
