Programme on the Topic “Violence on Social Media”

On August 10, 2024, a programme titled “Violence on Social Media” was  livestreamed on the internet, following the collaboration between the Section for Public Sphere Dialogue of the Missionary Department of the Archdiocese of Belgrade and Karlovci and the Internet portal  Žive Reči. It was hosted by Protopresbyter Ivan Cvetković, who runs the Orthodox portal Žive Reči, while the guest speaker on this important topic was Deacon Dr. Aleksandar Milojkov, the coordinator of the Section for Public Sphere Dialogue of the Missionary Department.

The programme analysed the social media phenomenon – its positive aspects and uses, but also its increasing misuse, which frequently turns into real internet violence, troll-driven manipulation, the spreading of fake news, and what is today known as cancel culture. The discussion also touched upon the attacks against the Serbian Orthodox Church on social media, the experiences and recommendations on how the Orthodox Christians should respond in such situations, and what the right approach is, generally speaking, when dealing with social media communication.

The livestream was followed by over 500 viewers, and the video received nearly 3000 views within the first 24 hours of airing. The link where you can view this interesting and informative programme is given below.
