As part of the Summer School of Parenting project, organised by the Missionary
Department of the Archdiocese of Belgrade and Karlovci and the Church of Saint
Mark the Apostle and Evangelist, a lecture by psychologist Viktor Vicanović entitled
“Parenting Styles in a Christian Context” was held in the crypt of the church on
Sunday, 30 August 2026, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The introductory address was delivered by Presbyter Vladimir Pekić, an associate of
the Missionary Department and a standing member of its Council. The lecturer, Viktor
Vicanović, then introduced those present to the four principal parenting styles:
authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful. Particular attention was
devoted to establishing a healthy balance between love, authority, discipline, and
freedom, as well as to the importance of the parents’ personal example in shaping a
child’s Christian values and spiritual life. The lecturer also presented the fundamental
principles of Christian upbringing and the challenges posed by the contemporary way
of life.
An engaging and thought-provoking discussion with the audience followed. The
questions and comments raised by those in attendance demonstrated the
contemporary relevance and importance of the topic, not only for parents but also for
all those involved in the process of raising and educating children.
